Debussy's Premiere Rhapsodie is one of two concertante works completed, premiered and published during his lifetime. He was commissioned to write it in 1909 for the final examination at the Paris Conservatoire in 1910. Debussy orchestrated it in the summer of 1911. While transferring the clarinet part from the already published version for clarinet and piano, he made a few subtle changes, particularly in m. 201, which has been a bone of contention among clarinettists for over a century. The present scholarly-critical publication is the first Urtext edition of the orchestral version. It draws on every known source and takes into account a previously ignored source that sheds new light on the piece.

Prelude a l'apres-midi d'un faune, often referred to as the first composition of the modern era, is one of Debussy's most popular and frequently performed orchestral works. The piece comes down to us in an array of sources, and several important ones are drawn upon for the first time in Baerenreiter's new scholarly-critical edition. Most of the currently available editions are based on the first edition from 1895 which, however, contains many engraver errors. When the corresponding orchestral parts are also taken into consideration, countless discrepancies are revealed.

The work may be played in two versions: with or without Debussy's Prélude No. 6 preceding it, the work upon which the “Pensées” are based. The Prélude, with the exception of the final chord, has been orchestrated by the composer.

Debussy wrote these two short dances to a commission from the instrument-making firm of Pleyel, which was keen to use famous names in the marketing of its newly-developed chromatic harp. The dances are also playable without problem on the pedal harp, which was to replace the chromatic harp on the concert platform. The archaic style of the pieces, including modal harmonies, used to express a “sacred” rite and a “profane” dance of joy, points to the enthusiasm for antiquity of Debussy himself and of the artistic world around 1900. This is Henle's first critical edition of the pieces, and is based on careful checking of the autograph and first edition.
